It may not be the first word that comes to mind when you think of fun. There is a little surprise in the university's learning management system!
It's no secret that sometimes Canvas can be a drag. From technical difficulties to dreaded assignments, online schools can be a hassle for many students. However, a secret was discovered on Canvas.
I have left a broken page open before going to lunch, one with the infamous astronaut and mars, accompanied by the words "Error 404". After lunch, the student clicked the space button to wake up their computer. They had unknowingly started a canvas game.
Two secret games are hidden within Canvas' "Page Not Found" page.
You can listen to a recording of this post:
You get two options when you start the game. Refreshing the page a few times will change both options.
Take on COVID-19
The first game is a classic fighter jet game. With the classic WASD controls or arrow keys, you control a fighter jet. You can press space to shoot needles at your enemies -- the COVID-19 virus. As you play, you can collect toilet paper for a brief power-up that increases the number of needles you shoot. There is no known ending to the game.
You have to play this game mostly using the spacebar. Hence if you want to score high here, your spacebar cps must be more. The best Space bar clicker I use is spacebartest.org to count my spacebar cps before gaming.
Move the square
In the second game, you can play an old-style game. As a blue square, you are faced with a very long pathway. As you navigate the pathway, you must dodge gray squares that come at you. In comparison to the other game, this one is the most difficult.
A blue square must traverse a long vertical path to reach the bottom of the game's second level. You must dodge oncoming grey squares as you make your way to the end, where a green square awaits. The longer you survive in this game, the higher your score will be. The harder of the two games is this one.
How to play?
You can find these games in broken Canvas pages, as mentioned previously. Just type random letters or numbers at the end of any link in Canvas to reach a broken page. An astronaut and rocket ship will float around a red planet on the "Page Not Found" page.
Press the spacebar when you are on the page, and one of the two games will appear. Canvas loads the two games randomly, so hit the spacebar again to get to the other one by refreshing the page.
There is only one problem with these games: You need to find an error 404 page on your own. The problem occurs when a teacher posts a link to a canvas page that you cannot access. You need not be afraid, however. The following is a link to a 404 error page that is currently working, so you can try it for yourself:
A fun way to take a break from coursework is to play games. Try them out and see if you can beat your friends' high scores!
